Actually, there are a pair of Wines of the Week this week: both from Caves Saint-Pierre, one a straightforward, juicy and fruity Côtes-du-Rhône from 2008 that's in Tesco, Somerfield and Sainsbury's for around £6.00, and this superior Gigondas from the great Rhône vintage of 2007, that's over twice the price. Both would be good partners for new season lamb, but the Gigondas offers a much deeper, more intense wine experience with its meaty and peppery edges to beautifully focused red fruits making it the more satisfying wine of the two, budget permitting. £12.99, Tesco.

Meaty, slightly savoury nose, very compact and complete. Powerful, rich, a red vin de garde, weight and elegance, but a lot of regional character.

Skalli named Red Winemaker of the Year 2009 (IWC)

Skalli has just been elected 'Winemaker of the Year' (Red Wines category) for its Caves Saint-Pierre wines, in the Rhône Valley, by the jury of the prestigious English International Wine Challenge (IWC). This is a distinction to add to the impressive list of awards for Skalli wines in 2009, which have become famous for their quality throughout the world.
